Kali Puja, also known as Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja is celebrated on the new moon day (Dipannita Amavasya) of the month of Kartick. Celebrated in Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Mithila, and the town of Titwala in Maharashtra and some other places.
In Bengal, it is called Dipabali also. On the same day, Lakshmi Mata puja also celebrated in Nepal and other parts of India.
Previously during Kali Mata puja, animal sacrifice was a must. But nowadays it is rarely done.
Puja is held at late-night when everywhere it is dark.
