The Aranmula Boat Race is the oldest river boat race in Kerala. It is held in Pathanamthitta district near the Hindu temple of Krishna and Arjuna. It is known for its unique history and grandeur.
The race is on the banks of the Pamba River and is held during Onam. Boat racing is one of the famous cultural attractions of Kerala. The snake boats move in pairs to the rhythm of singing and shouting throughout their throats, watched by an exciting crowd.
A large number of people gather on the banks of the Pamba River to watch the boat race. Traditional boat songs are sung by the sailors.
Sailors wear white Mundu and Turban. Boats are decorated with golden lace tied on the head of the boat, a flag in the center and a decorative umbrella make it a spectacle.
More than 50 boats take part in the race.
