Onam Festival is a harvest festival and celebrated in Kerala. The Festival is celebrated in Kerala and other places where Malayalam people reside in large numbers. It is a cultural festival also.
As per the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls in the month of August-September. It is a new year day for Malayalis. Onam is a major annual event for Malayali people in and outside Kerala.
According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.
One of the three major Hindu celebrations along with Vishu and Thiruvathira and is observed with numerous festivities.
In this festival Boat race, Tiger dances, Flower Rangoli, Worship, Onam Kali, Tug of War, Women's dance, Mask dance, Martial Arts, Music, plantation offerings, Costumes, Folk song, and dances are performed.
