Vishu is a Hindu festival celebrated in Kerala, and some parts of Karnataka, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, where the diaspora resides. Celebrated on the 1st day of Medam or Malayalam month, when day and night timings are equal. As per the English calendar, it comes in the month of April or May.
Actually, it is a harvest festival and observed throughout the Country in different names in different states. The day is the Malayalam new year. Keralites speak in their own Malayalam language.
Vishu is a festival of light and fireworks and celebrates with much fanfare and energy. Youngs touch the feet of seniors and they give money to juniors, the family feast is organized and celebrated with fireworks much more than Diwali. It helps to make the binding of the family more strong.
It is observed with lots of colorful rituals, the festival signifies prosperity. A good harvest brings joy to the common people and their barns will be full.
On this day people offer prayers for a good and productive new year.
