Ganga Dusshera is celebrated in UP for 10 days during June every year. According to myth, 'Gangavataran' or descent of Ganga takes place at this time. The Goddess Ganga brought down to Earth by the great meditation of Bhagirath.
Gomukh is the source of Ganga which is 2 days trek from Gangotri. Ganga flows through the holy places like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Garh-Mukteswar, Prayagraj, Varanasi and so on and in this places festival are held.
A large number of Hindu pilgrims come to Varanasi to touch the water, or a holy dip in the river. All the Ghats of Varanasi are full of devotees on this auspicious day.
It is believed that a holy dip will cleanse the person from all sins. In Haridwar also Holi Aartis are held. The person who dies on its banks believed to be most fortunate.
It is also believed that if the Aasthi after cremation is submerged in the water then the person will be liberated from the continuous cycle of birth and rebirth. The festival falls on 21st June, 2021.
