Agartala is a derivative of two words, namely Agar, a valuable perfume and incense tree of genus Aquilaria, and the Tala meaning underneath a reference to the density of Agarwood trees in the region is the capital city of Tripura, a northeast Indian state and the second-largest city in Northeast after Guwahati.
The Agar tree is historically referred to in the story of King Raghu who tied up his elephant's feet to an Agar tree on the banks of River Lauhitya. The city is the seat of the Government of Tripura. It is located on the banks of the Haro River near the Bangladesh Border, about 90 kilometers (55 mi) east of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka.
From 1901 to 1971 the city remained in negligible development progress with only an 8 sq. km area but from 1981 Agartala started to expand and increase its connectivity in various fields along with its city area with 58.84 sq. km. Greater Agartala is planned as of 2011 with an addition of 92 sq. km.
Agartala had a different type of history from the earlier times of the epic days as it was a princely state and was connected with Bangladesh. Though the East India Company had not arrived in the princely capital of the state. The East India Company had set their base of North East India in the Assam province with Shillong as their capital.
Huge, white Ujjayanta Palace, built-in 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya, has Mughal-style gardens with fountains. It houses the Tripura Government Museum, where displays include 9th-century sculptures. Nearby, ornate columns and pointed domes mark the Hindu temple, Jagannath Bari. North, Rabindra Kanan Park has flowerbeds and a puppet house.
Agartala is being developed under the Smart Cities Mission, a flagship scheme of the Govt. of India. Agartala is India's third international internet gateway after the ones in Mumbai and Chennai. Bir Bikram Kishor Debbarman is called the founder of the planned city of Agartala.
He had gone for a tour in the United Kingdom and after returning to his kingdom he decided that he would make Agartala in the image of the UK. During the 1940s the town was re-organized in a planned manner with new roads and a market building.
