It is the most important fort in India situated in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, about 2 Km from its more famous sister monument, The Taj Mahal. Sikandar Lodi was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted to Agra and lived in this fort.
Sher Shah Suri occupied this Fort for a short time defeating Humayun till 1555. But Humayun re-captured it. Agra Fort also known as the red fort of Agra and is among the best tourist places in Uttar Pradesh.
Only fort in India where all of the early Mughal emperors lived.
It is like a walled city. The Fort got its present appearance when Emperor Akbar was the ruler ( 1556-1605). Previously the Fort was made of bricks and was known as Badalgarh, but afterward, Akbar rebuilt it from its ruined condition with red sandstones.
Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 4,000 builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in 1573.
In 1983 it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and lies on the right bank of the river Yamuna.
