At a distance of 47 Km from Alappuzha, a magnificent Palace cum Museum located in Kayamkulam is Krishnapuram Palace. The famous Mural painter and architect, Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the king of Travancore built this Amazing and picturesque Palace. Situated on the top of a tiny hill and is encircled by a terraced garden, fountains, ponds, and beautiful lawns. The thin corridors, dormer windows, clutched roof, and ancient architectural style is visible in the palace. Krishnaswamy Temple at Krishnapuram is very close to it. Presently the Krishnapuram Palace is under the administrative control Kerala Archaeological Department. The usable of the old kings and their family members currently being exhibited in the Palace and opened up for the public. So, the palace turned to be a Museum of Government of Kerala. One of the major attractions of the Palace is it has one of the biggest Mural paintings. The painting is known as Gajendra Moksha and covered an area of nearly 53 sq. feet and it has rich historical importance. Kayamkulam Vaal, the double-edged sword also kept in the museum for public viewing. These Mural paintings are found everywhere in Kerala. Other attractions of the Palace include the picturesque garden in the compound that is having a variety of flora. Recently a Buddha Mandapam also erected here, and a big statue recovered from here is kept in the new Mandap. The Krishnapuram Palace has freshly renewed again following the precise methods that are designated for the protection of cultural monuments and remains to be a rare example of the Kerala style of architecture that has remained till date.
