In Amritsar, all festivals are celebrated with great delight, but the celebration of Diwali is very special in Amritsar. The Sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Singh returned to Amritsar on this auspicious day of Diwali.
In remembrance of his return, it is acknowledged by celebrating Diwali in great zeal and importance. Earthen Lamps are lighted to mark the release of Sixth Guru Hargobind Singh.
Though Diwali is mainly celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and few Buddhists also celebrate the Festival of light.
A long history is associated with the celebration of Diwali in Amritsar. Mughal Emperor imprisoned Guru Hargobind Singh in Gwalior Fort prison, and he was released on the auspicious day of Diwali, he also secured to release of 52 Kings. Since then he has been hailed as "Bandi Chor", which means the person who liberates.
Different Sikh factions in any part of the world gather in the Golden temple on this day to sort out internal and external disputes and take important decisions. This is called 'Sarbat Khalsa'.
