Barpeta Satra is a prime place of worship in Barpeta Assam. It is located centrally in the town. The Satra is known as Barpeta Than, and it was established around 500 years ago, sometime in 1583 AD, by Sri Madhabdeva.
In this Satra, Saint Madhabdev stayed for eight years. But he left this place to learn from Sri Srimata Sankaradeva and gave the responsibility of this Satra to one of his disciples named Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata, who became the first Satria of Barpeta Satra.
The premises of the Satra begin with three Batchara or entry gates, and the main complex of the Satra is protected by walls named as Nahati Batchara westside entry, Uttar Hati Batchara the North entry, and Dakshinhati Batchara the arrival from South.
There is a canal named Hari Jaan flowing on the eastern side of the Satra. The complex was built as a Kutcha house, but it was concreted later in the year 1870 and spread over a vast area with beautiful and decorative wall paintings.
In recent times the Barpeta Satra functions as a Kirtanghar, and it is the dominant site for Vaishnavite devotees, which aims to spread the teachings and culture of Vaishnavism.
