Dargah of Syed Shahnur Dewan is a famous tourist spot in Assam. It is situated in the Khandarkrpara region of the Barpeta district and about eight km away from the area headquarter of Barpeta.
Syed Shahnur Dewan was the disciple of Ajan Shah, who was a Muslim Sufi saint. It is believed that he had some mystical power of healing, and once he treated the queen Fuleswari, who was the wife of Ahom King Shiva Singha, and as he healed the queen, the king granted the saint some money and land. There was a copper plate instruction present on the site, in which all these details inscribed.
But in the year 1842, a Burmese innovation removed the copper plate from the site. The dargah is also known as Bhella Dargah, and it is an important shrine for Muslims.
Devotees often come to this site to offer their prayers. It is also a symbol of Islamic brotherhood and Sufi philosophy.
Dargah of Syed Shahnur Dewan can be visited at any time of the year. But it is better to visit during winter and spring because the weather remains relatively cool and dry during these seasons, making traveling serene and enjoyable.
