Mrinmayee temple is the oldest temple over 1000 years old, located in Bishnupur in the Bankura district of West Bengal. The temple is built by Malla king Jagat Malla in 997 AD.
The name Mrinmayee means anything that is made out of mud. Mrinmayee is another name of Goddess Durga. It is believed that the idol of Goddess, which is made of clay, is an old idol. Ganesh, Lakshmi, and Saraswati were also placed in this temple.
The Mrinmayee temple of Bishnupur is a part of the Rajbari premises. It has a serene and calm environment and houses a beautiful idol of Ma Durga.
This temple is famous for its Durga Pooja. The Durga puja takes place for 15 days, and in all other temples of Bishnupur, the worship does not start until the torch is lit from this temple.
When you are in the temple campus a strangely calming effect acts on your mind.
The temple also houses a cannon that is fired to mark the start of the Ashtami of Durga Puja.
The temple is a must-visit place for any tourist or traveler who comes to Bishnupur.
