The most prominent and sacred place in Buddhism, located 100 kilometers to the south of Patna, is Bodhi Tree. Because of its rich historical significance, it is so important. Under this tree Prince Gautam Buddha, the spiritual teacher attained enlightenment, who was later known as Buddha. As per belief, Gautam Buddha sat under this tree for seven days and did meditation. Afterward, a shrine has been erected in this place and known as Animisalocana Cetiya. In the 7th century, a small temple was also built near the tree. The bodhi tree is one of the four sacred places in Buddhism and visited by a large number of tourists from India and abroad. In the history of Buddhism, the Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura and the Anandabodhi tree in Sravasti are mentioned and both are significant pilgrimage sites in Bodh Gaya. Meditators and Yogis are attracted to these trees and temple complexes from the old times of Buddha. Buddhajnana, Padmasambhava, Vimalamitra, Nagarjuna, and Atisha, all renowned spiritual teachers have lived and meditated under this sacred tree. Mahabodhi Temple, just behind the Tree is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as a result, a large number of tourists from India and abroad are coming to visit this place every year.
