Champaner was founded by King Vanraj Chavda of the Chavada dynasty. Some people believe that the name Champaner is derived from the flower 'Champak' because the fire rocks found in this area also have a yellowish appearance like flowers, Pavagadh fort built just above Champaner was built by the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs.
Later, Mahmud Begada captured it. Mahmud Begada made it his capital. He named it Mahmudabad and spent 23 years here for the reconstruction and decoration of this city.
