Nalakunad Palace is a historical Palace situated at the bottom of Coorg's highest peak Tadiyendamol. It was built in 1792 and 1794 by king Dodda virarajendra after he escaped the Tippu sultan's troops.
To protect against enemy armies, Dodda Virarajendra built an underground tunnel that leads to Madikeri. This Palace was the last refuge of the Haleri kings of Kodagu, Chikka Virarajendra before he was deposed by the British.
The Palace is having carved dome and intricate wooden carvings. For King's marriage a beautiful Mandap was constructed in front of the palace. Sculptures and carvings of Gods and couples are there on the Mandap.
The Palace though looking very simple but construction was done with sharp minds and geniuses of architecture has been shown wisely.
This palace is a protected monument under the aegis of the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Karnataka.
Nalakunad palace can be visited any time of the year. But best time is from October to June.
