Home to unique and huge collection of specimens that includes wide varieties of skulls of animals, Bengal Natural History Museum has different type of horns of deers, head mounts of many animals fixed on the walls like Yak, Snow Leopard, Hog deer, Samber Deer, Black Buck and many more, skins of many reptiles and big cats, and literally, all the animals you can think of you will find here. The Museum has smartly designed floors to display all these different species of mammals, cats, birds, and insects. This museum is one of its kind in the whole Darjeeling. A testament to the inherent flora and fauna of the area, the Bengal Natural History Museum is an enthralling overabundance of more than 4000 specimens being displayed. The museum was initially erected to exhibit the Birds and Butterflies of the region in a small building. Today preserved remains of the reptiles, insects, fishes, bird species, and mammals are presented in a replication of their natural environments. A beautiful display of the various metals of the region is present here as well. There are two divisions at the museum, one at the ground level and the other in the footing. The insects' museum has a wide collection of butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and beetles. The museum also has a small library where one might find many fascinating books, including the 125 volume set titled The fauna of British India. While in Darjeeling you must visit the Museum for knowledge about the animals and insects of the region.
