Dispur

Dispur is the capital of Assam with a beautiful and panoramic view. It is about 10 km away from the rapidly growing commercial city of Guwahati. Before Dispur, the capital of Assam was Shillong.

When Meghalaya was separated from Assam in 1973, the capital of Meghalaya becomes Shillong, and the capital of Assam becomes Dispur. The city houses some of the important buildings like the Assam Secretariat, State Emergency Operations Center, and the Assam Vidhan Sabha House.

There are few more places of tourist importance in Dispur like Shilpgram, Assam State Emporium, Assam State Zoo, and Botanical Garden, and Vashistha Ashram etc. Dispur is also famous for the tea auction markets.

Despite being the capital, Dispur remains under the umbrella of its neighboring city Guwahati. The inhabitants here include people of Aryan, Tibetan, and Burmese origin. They firmly believe in their culture and heritage.

The Bihu festival is celebrated in a grand manner here. The official language is Assamese, but Hindi and English are also not uncommon.

The weather of Dispur is similar to that of Guwahati. The best time to visit here is from November to March when the monsoon ends and winter begins.

Dispur is well connected to the major cities of Assam by air, rail, and road.
