The Diu Fort is also known as the Portuguese Fort. It was built by the Arab Governor during the period 1535 to 1541 AD on the ruins of the old fort. The fort was built jointly by the Portuguese colonists and Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat to protect their territory from the forces of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. This 29 meters high fort, situated on the coastline till the end of the fort road surrounded by sea on three sides and is connected by a canal on the fourth side, also surrounded by two huge walls. The outer wall of the fort stands along the shoreline, and the inner wall of the fort is a stronghold of cavalry and cannons. The fort has a beautiful garden, a canal built on the way, a prison and a lighthouse, and offers a spectacular view of the vast ocean and its surrounding areas.
