Ganga Sagar Mela

Ganga Sagar Mela is the second largest human (after Kumbha Mela) congregation held at the confluence of River ganga and Bay of Bengal. It is 100 km away from Kolkata.

There is a proverb " Sab Titha Barbar, Ganga Sagar Ekbar".  A pilgrimage that millions of pilgrims come every year to take a holy dip, that washaway all the sins made in one's lifetime.

The Island is very large and covers an area of 224.3 Sq. km located on the shelf of the Bay of Bengal.

The mela is held around the Kapil Muni Ashram. It is the largest and oldest living tradition of West Bengal that has been mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Its existence was recorded at 400 BCE.

As per legend, Kapil Muni's Ashram was constructed by Queen Satyabhama in 430 AD, and the idol was established by Swami Ramanand in 1437, making the beginning of the pilgrimage that remains timeless till today.
