Surya Pahar, a lesser-known tourist spot, but it has great significance in terms of historical value. It is a noted archaeological site situated at the banks of the river Brahmputra, about 12 km southeast of the Goalpara district of Assam.
It is one of the most important heritage sites of the ancient remains in Assam. This sacred hill is considered holy for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. But only a little is known about the temples of this hill. The temple represents a pre-Ahom period and an example of the many uncharted sites in Assam that need attention.
This hill is a stretch of Shivalingas expanding up to a kilometer. It said that the Lingas, are formed by big rocks and boulders. Another unique thing about Surya Pahar is that there are 9999 Shivlings in this area.
It also believed that Krishan Dvaipayana, commonly known as Ved Vyasa, wanted to make a replica of Kashi.
In this place you will find the minutely detailed design of houses, which has significant archaeological importance. This sacred hill is open to all religions without any discrimination.
Surya Pahar is a large circular carved stone slab that correlated to Surya(sun). The inner center of the carved stone is said Prajapati, whereas the outer area is identified as twelve lotus petals.
This place is sacred because there are 25 votive stupas of different shapes and sizes are present at this place, as per the Buddhists.
And for Jains, this hill is sacred because there is a natural cavern inside which three rock-cut images of Jain figures found, and this place has the footprints of the Rishabhanath followers.
There are more than 173 sculptures, out of which 93 are on display in the galleries, where you can have a glance at the finely crafted art.
Apart from these fabled points, this hill also has a beautiful environment. It has lush green surroundings and ponds. The news of this hill is mesmerizing.
