Navagraha means nine planets. Navagraha Temple is situated on the Chitrashala hill. Nine Shivalingas have been installed inside the temple to reflect the nine planets. Each Shivalinga is covered with different colored cloth. It is believed that the Navagraha temple was built in the 18th century by Ahom king Rajeshwar Singh and later by his son Rudra Singh. A large part of the temple was destroyed in a terrible earthquake in 1897. However, it was later rebuilt with the help of iron sheets. It is believed that the old name of Guwahati Pragjyotishpur originated due to the astronomical and astrological center of the temple. The Silpukhuri pond built in the temple complex is also a major attraction here and said to be always full throughout the year. The temple is well connected to other parts of the city.
