The Ugratara Temple located at the western end of Push Pukhur in Upanayana Bazaar is also known as the Ugro Tara Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali. The temple is an important center of religious faith in Assam. Since it is situated in the heart of the city of Guwahati, it is easily accessible. It is believed that another form of Parvati goddess Ugra Tara lives in this temple. There is no statute of the Goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. In the temple, there is a small pit filled with water which is considered to be a goddess and is worshiped. According to mythology, this temple is also related to Buddhism, due to which people of Buddhism also come to this temple. It is built by the Ahom king Shiv Singh in 1725 and considered quite sacred, which is an important Shakti shrine. Like other monuments in Guwahati, this temple was partially damaged in the 1897 earthquake. This temple has been renovated many times, making it the pride of Guwahati today.
