The Umananda Temple is known for its architectural features, situated on the Peacock island at the vast Brahmaputra River. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and built by Bar Pukan Gadhaganya Handique during the reign of Ahom King Gadadhar Singh. A large number of devotees visit this place during the Shivaratri, which falls in February every year. The temple itself is beautiful, but the view of the Brahmaputra flowing around the temple is mesmerizing. If you are going to visit this temple, then go in the evening when the sun is sinking. The numerous carvings on the temple wall are quite interesting. The image of many people including Hindu god Lord Surya, Shiva, Ganesha, and Devi are carved on the wall. The temple can be reached only by boat or steamer.
