Hailakandi is a small beautiful town in the Indian state of Assam. It is located at a distance of about 330 km from Guwahati. Hailakandi district is one of the three districts of southern Assam. It forms the heart of Barak Valley along with Cachar and Karimganj. It was constituted as a civil subdivision on 1 June 1869, later upgraded to a district in 1989, when it was split from Cachar District.
As of 2011, it was the third most populous district of Assam after Dima Hasao and Chirang.
It is blessed with thick-covered lush green forest, sprawling tea gardens, lovely fruit orchards, and a gurgling river. The district has two reserved forests namely Inner Line Reserve Forest and Katkhal Reserve Forest.
Hailakandi has different communities, Miti, Bishnupriya, Kuki, Reng, Chakma, and immigrant populations. Most of the population speaks Sylheti. Meitei, the prime language of the district spoken by a minority.
