Hayagriva Madhava Temple

Hayagriva Madhava Temple is a sacred Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage. It is situated at the top of Manikuta hill in the town of Hajo, Assam. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Hayagriva incarnation.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Hayagriva to punish the demons, Madhu and Kaitva, because they had stolen the Vedas from Lord Brahma.

It is believed that the current structure of the Hayagriva Madhava Temple was constructed in the year 1583 by king Raghudeva Narayan, while some historians say that an emperor of the Pala dynasty had built this temple in the 6th century.

Hayagriva Madhava Temple consists of three main parts, they are the Shikhara on the top, the center, and the basement. The Shikhara of this temple is pyramid-shaped, the base of this temple consists of large brick pillars, and there is a spacious entrance hall in the front. Every year Hindu devotees, as well as Buddhist devotees, come to visit Hayagriva Madhava Temple.

The main attraction of this temple is the festival of Holi celebrated in March. This temple attracts a huge crowd of devotees and tourists to the gala of Holi. Bihu and Janmashtami. There are other festivals also which are celebrated with great cheer.
