According to local mythology, the city is named after the interesting love story of Bhagmati and Mohammad Quli Qutb Shah. It is said that Bhagmati was a dancing girl and the Sultan fell in love with her. The city was named Bhagyanagar by Quli Qutb Shah in the name of his love. When she converted to Islam, the Sultan married her secretly and named Hyder Mahal. Based on this, the city was later renamed Hyderabad.
