Salarjung Museum, a popular national museum is featuring rich and glorious history of Hyderabad. The Museum is spread over an area of 10 acres and consists of 2 floors.
Besides Indian articles, a large number of items collected from various parts of the world namely Paris, Japan, Europe, North America, China, Nepal, Burma and, Egypt have also been kept here for viewing. Among them, Carpets, furniture, sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, terracotta, textiles, clock, and other metal items are on display in the museum.
All the articles belong to the Salar Jung family. Most of the artifacts belonged to Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, known as Salar Jung III. A few of the valuable and rare articles in the museum are a painting of the social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the sword of Aurangzeb, daggers that belonged to Shah Jahan, Jehangir and a wardrobe consisting of the belongings of Tipu Sultan.
Nawab Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung Tritiya spent a large part of his wealth in collecting these items for 35 years. It is assumed that more than half of the things were theft or looted by the people who were entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining and preserving it.
