Jammu is a city located in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India, the largest city in the Jammu region and the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated on the banks of the river Tawi and lies at uneven ridges of low heights of Shivalik hills, an average elevation of 327 meters.
It is surrounded by the Shivalik range to the north, east, and southeast, while the Trikuta Range surrounds it in the northwest. Jammu is approximately 600 kilometers from the national capital, New Delhi.
Due to the presence of many old and new temples in the city, Jammu is also called city of temples. The city has numerous shrines for Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians too.
Jammu also serves as a base camp for the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi. It is also the railhead of the state. The city of Jammu is named after its founder. Rai Jambulochan founded it and called it Jambupura, which later deteriorated to Jammu.
According to many historians and local legends, the city was founded by Rai Jambulochan in the 14th century AD. Rai Jambulochan was the younger brother of King Bahulochan. Bahulochan had built the Bahu fort on the banks of the river Tawi, and Jambulochan built the city of Jambupura.
The city of Jammu is a historical city and has been the capital of the former Jammu Province and later the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The prime language of Jammu is Dogri. Apart from Dogri, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Kashmiri languages are spoken here.
