Poonch Fort was built by King Rustam Khan in 1713 AD. Initially, the was made for the fortification of the area and for housing the royal family.
The construction of the fort seems to be influenced by the architectural style of the Mughals. During the 6th century, the famous Chinese traveler Huen Tsang crossed the Poonch area. Huan Sang mentioned in her book that this area was famous for fine Musloom Tea, Graphic Art, and good quality Horses.
It is said that it took many years to build this fort. This fort features a series of buildings arranged around four irregular courtyards. These structures belong to the distinct eras of Muslim rule, Sikh rule, and Dogra rule.
Many changes were made in the fort when Sikhs came here and they introduced the Sikh style. Raja Moti Singh had discovered Dogra Raj in Poonch, and for this, he had brought stones from Europe to build the gate of the fort.
This fort stands as the pride of Poonch and is one of the city's main tourist attractions.
Poonch is also famous for its beautiful seven lakes. Tourists must visit Poonch fort.
