Ranbireshwar Temple is located on Shalimar Road, opposite Jammu and Kashmir Civil Secretariat in Jammu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is a very ancient temple in the city of Jammu.
The temple built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883. Later this temple was named after Maharaja Ranbir Singh. This temple is the biggest temple of Lord Shiva in North India.
The chief attraction of the temple is the idol and Shivlinga of Lord Shiva kept in the temple. The height of the Shivlinga is 8 feet, made from a black-colored stone, which is the largest Shiva Linga in North India. This Shiva Linga built under the Dogra rulers.
It also enshrines twelve more Shivlinga in the temple, made out of crystal measuring 15 cm to 38 cm. Galleries with 1.25 lakh bona lingam brought from the Narmada River, can be witnessed on stone slabs inside the temple.
The temple has large idols of Lord Ganesh, Kartikeya, and Nandi the bull, Nandi's statue is made of brass weighing about 1000 kg.
All festivals are celebrated with great pomp in Ranbireshwar temple, especially the gala of Mahashivaratri is celebrated with great ritual.
