Jorhat is one of the major cities of Assam, and its strategic location in the northern part of the state makes it a gateway of Upper Assam and Nagaland state.
The word Jorhat made up of two words - Jor means two, and Haat means market. Jorhat was carved out of the Sibsagar district in 1983. In the 18th century, two weekly markets were the main attraction in the area, Chowki Hat and Macharhat, located on either side of the Bhagdoi River.
Jorhat also holds the distinction of being the last capital of the Ahom kings. Thus, the city has many historical relics that date back to the royal days of Ahom rule.
Jorhat is famous for the tea gardens. There are about 135 tea gardens located in and around Jorhat. These tea estates not only make the region the largest producer of tea but have also been an integral part of the region. Jorhat tourism is incomplete without visiting some of the tea gardens like Cinnamara Tea Garden, Tokalai Tea Research Center, the oldest tea institute, adds to the beauty of Jorhat.

Jorhat is known for its rich culture. This small town itself has preserved the Ahom culture in the form of music and literature. The prosperity of the Ahom kingdom is conserved, but also the splendidly mixed modernity seen here. The culture here has dominated by fine musicians, writers, and historians. Virendra Kumar Bhattacharya, the first Assamese writer, awarded the Jnanpith Award, and Krishna Kanta Handik, a well-known name in the field of education are from Jorhat.
