Gazpur was a place for keeping elephants. Presently this place has turned into ruins, but still, it is interesting to visit here. Gaj is an Assamese word that means elephant.
Here during the reign of king Swargadeo Pratap Singha, about 1000 elephants of soldiers were tied. Order was issued to commemorate the construction of a new city founded by the king.
The king first named it Hatigarh and asked to buy a place where elephants can be kept. But soon, the king realized that it was impossible to capture 1000 elephants. Later he changed the name of this place to Gazpur, the place where the elephants weren't kept.
Gazpur is situated to the north of Shiva temple. It is easy to reach Gazpur from the city center. Tourists can easily reach Gazpur by taxi or bus.
