Thengal Bhavan is the official place where the first Assamese newspaper was released. Now it has become a leading attraction in Jorhat. It was built by Raibahadur Siva Prasad Barooah in 1880 and the first newspaper printed in the year 1929 in the local language, named the Assamese weekly.
This newspaper called Dainik Batori when it was first distributed. But unfortunately, it was sent from a remote village where there was no post office. Barooah wanted to convert this weekly newspaper into a daily newspaper, and he did so, which was soon distributed throughout India.
Thengal Bhawan is a go-to spot for anyone who visits Jorhat, even though it is very simplistic. Barooah was the owner of this newspaper, and Bagmibar Nilamani Phukan was the editor.
The weekly newspaper was the first-ever newspaper to be printed in the Assamese language, and it holds a large amount of significance in the history of Assam.
