The Roman Catholic, Latin rite shrine and the famous historic site of great religious importance, about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from Kanyakumari in Kottar, the stark white spires of St. Xavier Church, is dedicated to mother Marry, stand sentinel over this little coastal town. St. Francis Xavier a dedicated and exceptional priest lived in Goa was built this church around 1600 AD during one of his trips to the Kanyakumari district from Goa. St. Francis Xavier church remains a historic site to be seen even after these centuries. The sandy beaches and the multi-colored granite rocks are among other attractions here. The Church of St. Xavier enjoys great fame and is visited by large numbers of catholic devotees during the annual festival celebrated between November and December which lasts for 10 days. The church is believed to be the place of miracle. Peoples of all faiths from all over the world come here for spirituality, power, and divinity. It attracts people from all faiths. Hindus also are seen here doing prayer, pouring oil and join in other activities of the Church. From British India, Ceylon and Malacca visit this church and attend the annual festival in December to seek blessings from the Lord.
