Kausani is a beautiful hill station situated at an altitude of 6075 feet above sea level. Apart from the huge Himalayas, there is a grand view of Nandakot, Trishul, and Nanda Devi Mountain from here. This hill town is situated on the top of a hill, amidst the thick trees of the pine, and from here, one can get a Wonderful view of the beautiful valleys of Someshwar, Garuda, and Baijnath Katyuri.
A long time ago, Kausani was a part of the Almora district and was known as Valna. At that time, Almora district was under the jurisdiction of King Bacheldev of Katyuri. Later, the king gave a large part of it to a Gujarati Brahmin Shri Chand Tiwari. Mahatma Gandhi, impressed by the grandeur of the place, called this place Switzerland of India. Presently, Kausani is a famous tourist destination, and every year tourists come from all over the world.
Apart from the beautiful hills and mountains, Kausani is also known for ashrams, temples, and tea gardens. Anashakti Ashram is a famous ashram here, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for a few days. It has now developed into a study and research center, where living and eating facilities are also available. Another known ashram is Lakshmi Ashram. It is also known as Sarla Ashram. This ashram was built in 1948 by Catherine Hillman, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
Pinnate Temple, Shiva Temple, Rudrahari Mahadev Temple, Kot Bhramari Temple, and Baijnath Temple are some of the major religious sites of Kausani situated at an altitude of 2750 meters above sea level, the Pinnath Temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Bhairon, the Shiva temple falls in the city of Someshwar, which is 11 km from Kausani, built by Somchand, the founder of the Chand dynasty.
There is also a museum here, which is known as Sumitranandan Panth Gallery, exhibits collection of poems manuscripts, various works, and much more.
Risk-loving tourists can enjoy trekking (hiking) and rock climbing (rock climbing) here. Sundar Dhunga Trek, Pindari Glacier Trek, and Milam Glacier Trek are among the best trekking routes in India. The place is also known for celebrating Makar Sankranti, a festival of Hinduism called Uttarayani here.
Kausani is easily accessible by air, rail, and road from different parts of the country. The nearest airport here is Pantnagar, and the nearest railway station is Kathgodam, well connected to other cities in India. Kausani bus station is also directly connected to many cities.
April and June are said to be the best time to visit Kausani.
