Alipore Zoo is the oldest zoological park to have been established in India. It is also known as the Calcutta Zoo or the zoological garden of Alipore, and it is a prime tourist attraction in Kolkata, West Bengal.
It was established in 1876, and it covers an area of around 46.48 acres.
It is perhaps the best known for being the home of the expired Aldabra giant tortoise 'Adwaita', a tortoise who lived for 250 years and died in 2006.
The Zoo also houses one of the few captive breeding projects involving the Manipur brown-antlered deer. Alipore zoo is one of the most famous tourist spots in Kolkata, and it attracts tourists from all over the nation, especially during the winter season.
There are more than 1266 animals and around 108 different species of animals present in this Zoo.
