Birla Planetarium is officially called M. P. Birla Planetarium is an ethical place to visit in Kolkata. It is situated on the Chowringhee road, right in proximity, to Victoria Memorial and St. Paul's Cathedral Church.
The Planetarium is a single-storeyed circular structure. That designed in the typical Indian style, and its architecture is similar to the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi. Popularly known as Taramandal, the Birla Planetarium is the largest in Asia and the second largest in the world. This Planetarium was inaugurated on 2 July 1963 by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Many shows and programs held in various languages including, Hindi, English, and Bengali. Apart from being a Planetarium, there is also an electronics laboratory and an astronomy gallery present in this Planetarium, that has a collection of paintings and astronomical models.
