The East Kolkata Wetlands are a group of natural and artificial wetlands bordered by green embankments and channels located in the east of Kolkata. It is spread over an area of about 125 square kilometers.
It is declared as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in East Kolkata on 19 August 2002.
There are also saltwater marshes and salt fields in the marshland, and sewer removal occurs in many places.
