The Eden Gardens is often referred to as the home of Indian cricket in Kolkata, India, a beautiful, well-maintained cricket stadium in Kolkata. The stadium located in the BBD Bagh area, near the Eden Gardens State Secretariat and the Calcutta High Court is situated.
It was established in the year 1864 by the Governor-General of Auckland. He named the garden and the cricket ground after his two sisters, Emily and Fanny Eden. Also, its creators heavily inspired by the Bible from the Garden of Eden. Initially, it was named Auckland Circus Garden, due to several reasons, later renamed as Eden Garden.
This ground spread over 50 acres, and this stadium has a seating capacity of about 66349 people. This stadium is the oldest and second-largest stadium in India and the third-largest stadium in the world.
The stadium has hosted many iconic matches and is a witness to several epic Cricket team encounters. Eden Gardens was host to the 2016 T20 World Cup as well as many Asia Cup matches. It hosted 82 international cricket matches, which makes the highest number of international cricket matches in India.
It doubles as a quaint destination for nature lovers when it is not hosting any sports. The lush green paths of the Garden of Eden shaded by towering mahogany, mango, and banyan trees make it a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the wonders of nature.
There is also a three-story Burmese pagoda in red and golden yellow, which was brought here by Lord Dalhousie.
The Eden Gardens Stadium hosts several sports, the most important being cricket. At present, it is the home ground of Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL team) and the regional Bengal Cricket team. Eden Gardens is the headquarters of the Cricket Association of Bengal. It is also known for hosting many association matches.
You can also visit here when there is no match going on here, and for this, evening time is the best time to visit this place. But for this, you have to take prior permission from the Cricket Association of Bengal(CAB).
