Marble palace is a magnificent mansion situated in North Kolkata. This mansion is famous for its marble walls, sculptures, and floor from which it derives its name. Marble palace is one of the best-preserved and the most elegant house of the nineteenth-century still present in Kolkata.
It was built by Raja Rajendra Mullick in 1835. He was a wealthy Bengali merchant who had a passion for collecting works of art. This mansion continues to be a residence for his descendants.
Marble Palace shows Neoclassical style in Architecture, while its open courtyards appear the traditional Bengali style. There is a Thakur-Dalan, place of worship adjacent to the plaza.
The mansion also has tall fluted Corinthian pillars and embellished verandas with fretwork and sloping roofs, built similarly in the style of a Chinese pavilion, and the premises include a garden with lawns, a lake, a rock garden, and a small Zoo.
If you want to visit the palace, then you need to obtain a prior permit from the West Bengal Tourism Information Bureau at BBD Bag, Kolkata. Photography is not allowed inside the premises, as the marble palace is private property.
But the visitors are given an escorted tour across the property, where a guide will provide valuable insights about the various artworks and objects on exhibit.
