Rabindra Sarovar or Lake is an artificial lake and the second-largest water body in South Kolkata. Earlier it was also known as Dhakuria Lake. It is the only national lake of Kolkata, which spread over 48 hectares and includes many small water bodies.
It considered a big ecological reserve of the city. The lake is surrounded by gardens, parks, trees, shrubs, auditoria, and a jogger's strip.
There is a museum inside the premises of the lake, which is called Thakur-der-gallery, it houses some of the award-winning Durga idols of Kolkata. This museum was initially an abandoned Waterhouse.
It was excavated in the 1920s to provide soil to fill the low-lying areas of Ballygunge, which was then made habitable by the Calcutta Improvement Trust.
It is popularly known as the heart of Kolkata.
Things to do in Rabindra Sarovar are - People can meditate at the sunrise point, and offer prayers to the sun, you can join the salsa classes organized here on weekends only, swimming classes, kayaking, water ballet, and regatta, etc.
The Sarovar becomes home to several migratory birds during winters, and it is a birder's paradise.
But like most artificial lakes in the country, Rabindra Sarovar is also facing environmental degradation.
Water pollution is increasing due to the increase in the flow of tourists around the lake.
Recently the Government of India has also started a comprehensive tree plantation program under the national lake Conservation Programme.
