Shaheed Minar is a monument located at Esplanade in central Kolkata in the northeast facet of the Maidan. It was built in 1828 in the memory of Major General Sir David Ouchterlony, commander of the British East India Company, to commemorate his successful defense and conquest of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804.Armed forces of the East India Company on the Gorkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War.
In August 1969, it was re-dedicated to the memory of the martyrs of the Indian independence movement hence renamed as Shaheed Minar, meaning Martyrs Memorial in both Bengali and Hindi, by the United Front Government in memory of the martyrs of Indian Independence protest.
The present government has decided to illuminate the tower in the evening and allow visitors to climb to the top. To the northeast of the Maidan, the tower is 157 feet high.
Its foundation is based on the Egyptian style. The pillar is a combination of manners with a classical flute pillar, a Syrian upper part, and a Turkish dome. There are two balconies above it. The top floor of the Minar can be reached by a curved staircase, which has 223 steps. It has a total of 218 footfalls to the top of the tower.
The south ground of Shaheed Minar is known as Shaheed Minar Maidan or Brigade Ground. It has a history of organizing political rallies and fairs.
The central bus terminus of the city is around the monument.
The monument has a panoramic view of the city. One of the oldest monuments of Kolkata has come alive again after it renovated a few years back.
It is good to visit the monument in the evening when the tower is fully lit.
