South Park Street Cemetery is one of the oldest non-church cemeteries, which is one of the most unusual attractions in Kolkata and is located near Mother Teresa Sarani.
When it was established in Kolkata, it was the largest cemetery outside Europe and America. The cemetery was opened in 1767 when the growth of the British Empire in Bengal began. It built because the old cemetery was filling up, and space was running out to bury the new body.
At that schedule, many British and European colonial residents in Kolkata were caught by tropical disease, due to which many people of old age were dying. At that time, the area known as Burial Ground Road. The first person to be buried here was John Wood, author of Custom House. But the oldest gravestone in South Park Street Cemetery is Mrs. Sarah Pearson, who was buried here in 1768, and the youngest monument says that an anonymous virtuous mother died in 1825.
The plaque on the cemetery's gate says that this cemetery ceased to be used in 1790 but was totally abandoned in 1830. When it closed out, there were over 1600 graves. You will see many fascinating and Gothic tombs here.
Today it is preserved as an Archaeological Survey of India site. It is forbidden to go here as it is closed to the public.
It is a popular area for locals and tourists, and the atmosphere is very calm.
What adds to the beauty here is the green moss that grows on all the graves and floors.
