St John's Church was built during the rule of the British Kingdom when Kolkata was the capital of British India, and it is one of the oldest churches in the city. This church was originally a cathedral, and it served as an Anglican cathedral till St John's Church was made the Anglican cathedral in 1847.
St John's Church is located at the Northwestern corner of Raj Bhavan.

The foundation stone of St John's Church was laid on 6th April 1784 by warren hasting's the governor-general of India. The architect of this church was James Agg, and he built this church with a combination of brick and stone.
