Bithoor is located on the banks of the Ganges River, about 20 km from Kanpur. It is considered to be the birthplace of the sons of Lord Rama, Luv, and Kush. It is also said that the epic Ramayana was composed here.
Today, the city has many temples and bathing Ghats that are considered sacred by Hindus. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the world at this place.
Bithoor is also famous for the annual fair held on the day of Kartik Purnima in November.
Bithoor is widely known for being associated with the freedom struggle of 1857. During British rule, the city was a part of Kanpur district in the United Provinces.
It was here that Maratha Chief Minister Bajirao Peshwa was banished after his defeat. Later the Peshwa's adopted son Nana Sahib made the city his headquarters, later the city was occupied by General Havelock in 1857.
