The British Residency is one of the most important historical sites of Lucknow, includes many buildings. Its construction started by Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula in 1775, and it was completed by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan in 1800 AD. It is situated on the banks of river Gomti.
It is clear from the name of the Residency that it is a residence, the residence of the British Resident General, who represented the British Government in the court of the Nawabs.
This entire complex played an important role in the famous siege of Lucknow in the first battle of India's independence. A major part of the British Residency destroyed in the battle between the English Forces and the Indian rebels.
It left after the war; the broken walls of the British Residency still have marks of cannonballs. There is also a ruined church in this complex that has a cemetery in which the tombs of about 2000 British soldiers, men, women, and children remain.
