Located in the heart of Madurai city, Gandhi Museum was built in 1959, 11 years after his sad demise. One of the five best Gandhi Museums in the country and recognition of the father of nations cherished memory the museum was constructed. The museum describes so many things in Indian history. It shows the remarkable mementos associated with the Indian freedom struggle, the life of Mahatma Gandhi, describing the struggles of Indians for independence from 1757 to 1947. On 15th April 1959, the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the Gandhi Museum. The museum describes the freedom struggle and sacrifice made by the Freedom fighters to make India, our motherland free from British rule. Everything is represented in graphical form. The 17th-century palace has a rich history of peace museums and is enlisted by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) as one of the Peace Museum Worldwide. Around 100 replicas and relics of artifacts about Gandhiji is also houses in the museum. The museum galleries depict the pre-independence era of freedom struggle, the atrocities committed by the Britishers. A huge collection of letters written to and from Mahatma Gandhi is also on display here. British era stamps are also in the collection list of the museum. The letters sent to the activist come and poet Subramania Bharati, Adolf Hitler, the infamous dictator are kept here. The sections containing 124 rare photographs of Gandhiji's personal life are the most exciting part of the museum. Different stages of his life starting from childhood to death are depicted through photographs. The bloodstained cloth worn by Bapuji on his assassination day is also kept here. You will be surprised to see the clothes and will be ashamed and became silent remembering the brutal killing done by miscreants. Come with friends and family and explore the museum.
