This town area was established as a part of Dutch Coromandel in the seventeenth century, it was earlier the center for weaving superfine muslin cloth for export besides pearl and edible oil. The magnificent Sadras Fort was built by the dutch, then raided by the British in 1818 and came under control of British East-India Company. The First historic battle of British-east india company and Dutch started here. At present this place is home to Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research(IGCAR).
