Located in the Andheri suburb of Mumbai amidst concrete jungles is Mahakali Caves. It is said that this is the cave that gave place to world-renowned writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar during the days of the conflict, Akhtar Sahab has spent many nights here. Mahakali Cave is one of the two caves located in the city of Mumbai which is about 2000 years old, used to be an intellectual monastery as well as inhabited by many Buddhist monks. A day trip to this cave where stone cutwork will make your day enthusiastic. This structure made of solid black Basalt rocks will take you on a journey of thousands of years old. Mahakali Caves were also called Kondivita caves at some time. Though this cave is not as huge as Ajanta Ellora, it is a centre of attraction among tourists. Inside the cave are prayer houses, and chambers where Buddhist monks used to live, made up of 19 caves, and was constructed from about 1st century to 6th century. There is also a Shiva temple and a huge Shivalinga in the center of Mahakali Cave. It is said that whoever wishes a vow by sticking a coin in this Shivalinga, his wishes are fulfilled. The 9th cave is the largest in Mahakali cave, it relates Buddhist mythology and seven pictures of Buddha.
