On the Island, 109 Buddhist Caves are found. The two important Metropolis of Mumbai, namely Thane and Mira-Bhyandar lies on these Islands.
The conflict between the Marathas and the Portuguese over Salsette took place in March 1739. Maratha's power at this time was a progressive force under the leadership of Peshwa Bajirao.
But the Marathas were sweaty to take the islands and basins of Salsette. This task was completed by Bajirao's brother, Chimnaji.
The British of Bombay were frightened by this incident. Therefore, the Britishers signed an agreement with the Marathas in July 1739 and the Marathas allowed the British to trade in the Deccan.
